The Problem Of Homelessness And Homelessness - 1919 Words
At some point in oneââ¬â¢s life, a person has seen or heard of an individual who lives on the streets. An individual who lives on the streets and holds a sign that says they need money for food is considered homeless. Sadly, these individuals are everywhere and the amount of people currently homeless in the United States is 564,708 according to the National Alliance to End Homelessness. However, in this nation, everyone has the ability to decrease this massive number. Necessary assistance from agencies, local funding, churches, and volunteers will place these homeless individuals in permanent housing. With this assistance, the number of homeless individuals will begin to decrease. To solve the problem of homelessness, people must understandâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It is not just the sudden change of environment, but also the sudden change of lifestyle they now have to adjust to. Even if these individuals find a homeless shelter to stay in, they would still have to adjust to the conditions of the shelter. The issue of physical health can also have an effect on the homeless individual. The National Alliance to End Homelessness says that because the homeless are not able to afford medical care, they can suffer from a number of health issues. Those issues can be colds and flu, skin diseases from not being able to bathe properly, nutritional deficiencies, and sleep deprivation. In addition, ââ¬Å"diabetes and heart diseases are also found at high rates among the homelessâ⬠(National Alliance to End Homelessness). Although physical health issues can be serious in homeless individuals, most conditions can be resolved or treated. On top of health issues, homeless individuals also experience spiritual and emotional discontentment. Somerville also points out that homeless individuals have been deprived territorially because of their ââ¬Å"lack of privacyâ⬠from living on the streets (384). This could leave the individual feeling vulnerable to anyone who sees them in their state and walks away. Consequently, they may feel that the world has abandoned them because there is no one helping or reaching out to them. TRUST AND INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS When working in teams, is trust assumed or do team members have to earn trust? As in all aspects in life involving peopleââ¬â¢s trust is in no way just given but obtained by earning it. Trust among individuals is dynamic and through similar experience it is earned. Nevertheless, trust cannot be clarified exclusively through the interaction among individuals, but also through incredibly private points of view. We are inclined to trust individuals who we regard as trustable. The assessment about an individualââ¬â¢s credibility or whether or not they can be trusted is none the less still completely subjective. While involved in a team, individuals need to trust their teammates in order to complete all tasks because getting the work done involves all members, which in turn stresses cooperation and collaboration. The loss of trust will cause conflicts to arise and members of the team will be unwilling to compromise, cooperate and agreements will never be achieved which will jepardizes the tasks from being accomplished. If a team loses that trust it may never truly be earned again and if it is, it takes an extraordinary amount of commitment and effort for it to be regained. Keeping trust between individuals while working on a team, individuals must display the expectation and standard set by the team. Each team member has to be accountable for their actions, they need to be committed to the team and steer clear of excessively taking advantage of their teammates. For example, deadlines will be set by the team for individual tasks according to a team agreement; each individual needs to keep the promise to fulfill their assigned task on time as agreed. If this does not happen, trust will possibly be lost since other members of the team are depending and relying upon that individualââ¬â¢s accomplishments. Dominant economic features The TomTom Consumer Business Unit (one of the four units of TomTom) operates in the Consumers Electronic Industry, more specifically, Personal Navigation Devices (PND) industry. Before taking a look at the competitive forces within the industry it was decided to get a better understanding of the industry in which the company operates. To this purpose the decision was made to use the Abell Model, which focuses on 3 different dimensions of the industry: â⬠¢ â⬠¢ â⬠¢ To whom are they selling (who are their customers) What are the customer needs that are satisfying In what way are the customersââ¬â¢ needs satisfied TomTom is targeting its PND towards drivers ââ¬â the idea behind the product is that it tries to identify the best preferred way of getting from point A to B. What is meant by best preferred way is that different customers may have different ideas of what is the best route to take in order to achieve their goal (for example, some people prefer a highway route, whereas others would rather like the back roads ââ¬â and as such they can set their PND to take into account their preferences). As mentioned before, TomTomââ¬â¢s PND is targeting drivers. What has not been mentioned is what sort of drivers and whether these drivers have a need for PNDs. The reason behind it is that for TomTom it does not matter. The business unit that is being analyzed offers not only physical devices that can be attached to any driving machine, but it also offers the software behind the physical device to smartphones. This enables customers to use their own smartphones to navigate maps, find and change the route they are planning to take and whether or not they are driving a car. This raises the question: what are people exactly looking for when they are buying a PND? One of the basic needs of drivers is represented by a device to help them navigate either through unknown roads, or knowingly busy roads ââ¬â people are interested in seeing and planning the road ahead. This also includes being warned of possible traffic jams, road blocks or detours. Behind this idea are three main requirements: the availability of affordable devices, the affordability of data plans and maps, and finally; reliability. As for the last dimension mentioned in the Abell model, how does the industry satisfy customer needs? One could refer to the life cycle of the navigation systems products: starting with basic navigation systems introduced by Etak in 1985, it was followed shortly by the introduction of commercialized GPS at the beginning of the ââ¬Ë90s. All modern systems are based on these. Thereââ¬â¢s been a continuous technological development in PNDs, aligning them to the three customer demands: the availability of affordable devices, the affordability of data plans/maps and the reliability of such devices. 7 The interesting trend nowadays in the PNDs market is the tendency towards device convergence 1. People tend to prefer to have navigation applications on their smartphone devices. This trend leads us to the conclusion that the PNDs industry has reached its maturity stage (in the industry life cycle) and depending on the near future success of the device convergence relating to navigation systems, may very well start its decline phase. 2. Competitive forces After defining the industry within which TomTom is operating, it is time to take a look at the competition levels within it. This is done in order to determine how attractive the industry currently is. To do this, the Porter 5 Forces model will be used. This model analyzes the industry from the competitionââ¬â¢s point of view, pays attention to the threat of new entrants, the availability of substitutes and the power of both buyers and suppliers. Rivalry among competing sellers One of the most important factors behind the rivalry among competing sellers is that the PND market is at the end of its maturity phase and has started its decline. TomTom is the market leader and its main competitor is Garmin, both in European market and in the North American market. This influences the new entrants in two possible ways. Firstly is the ease of access to distribution channels, which would make this threat considerably high. Secondly is, in order to be able to compete with the main competitors, you have to expect an increasing pressure on pricing policies. This could minimize the margins for the sold products, which could force smaller/new competitors out of the market. Furthermore, due to the main distribution channels being so well known and big, the main competitors on the market will have to compete with the low price/low quality products stream coming from China. Threat of substitutes The PND industry is highly threatened by handsets, such as smartphones and PADs. These come with a whole new set of Location Based Services applications of which some are free of charge. Like we mentioned in the brief industry analysis of the PND market, thereââ¬â¢s a trend towards convergence of devices and this trend is fueled by customersââ¬â¢ desire to have one device to do the job, rather than having two devices. Bargaining power of suppliers Companies in the PND industry have a trend of vertically integrating in the supply chain. For example, TomTom makes its own software, does its own manufacturing and makes its own maps. Due to this aspect, we could conclude that the threat is of low importance and thus irrelevant. Bargaining power of buyers At present, the buyers are inspecting/testing the new devices offering location based services. As the smartphones have yet to have imposed themselves on the navigation market, we could say that for reliability and comfort of use they will return to the PNDs. 9 Nevertheless, with ââ¬Å"predicted/expectedâ⬠future success of substitutes, the bargaining power of the buyers with also increase and demand for a big product range will be high. Fierce price competition will also increase the buying power of customers and the product life cycle will grow shorter and shorter. This is currently the case with smartphones and other high-tech device. The price competition increases the pressure on manufacturers, and as such, increases the bargaining power of buyers. 3. Driving forces and impact These are the two driving forces which have the biggest effect on TomTom 2. Lifestyle of customers With the rise of smartphones people have become aware that a phone can be used for more than just texting and calling. Smartphones have the possibility to make photoââ¬â¢s, play games, surf the internet and also (most relevant for TomTom) navigate. Most smartphones have location software as part of their standard software package. This software has been able to provide consumers with TomTomââ¬â¢s core product, which is getting a person from A to B. He boasts that, unlike a summerââ¬â¢s day, the memory of his beloved will last forever. The speaker personifies the sky, or ââ¬Å"heaven,â⬠by using the metaphor of an ââ¬Å"eyeâ⬠for the sun so that the comparison between a person and a season becomes dramatic. By assigning heaven an ââ¬Å"eye,â⬠the speaker uses the image of his belovedââ¬â¢s eyes. Similarly, in the next line when the speaker mentions that summerââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"gold complexionâ⬠is often ââ¬Å"dimmed,â⬠he is attempting to compare a human attribute with some trait of summer. Enron, ââ¬Å"a provider of products and services related to natural gas, electricity and communications to wholesale and retail costumersâ⬠represented one of the largest fraud scandals in history. As a result of the fraud investigations, the company was forced to file for bankruptcy in December 2001. While the bankruptcy of a small company is taken as a routine, Enronââ¬â¢s case is different as the company was ranked seventh by Fortune 500. During the 1990s, Enron expended quickly into several areas such as developing a power plant and a pipeline. This expansion, however, required large initial capital investments and long gestation period. By that time, Enron already raised a lot of debt funds from the market and hence any other attempt to raise funds would affect Enronââ¬â¢s credit rating. But Enron had to maintain the credit ranking at investment rate in order to continue business. On top of that, the company wasnââ¬â¢t making enough profits either, as it promised to investors. Hence, Enron began making partnerships and other special ââ¬Å"arrangementsâ⬠(Special Purpose Entity, or SPE). These companies were used to keep Enronââ¬â¢s debts and losses away from its balance sheets, therefore allowing it have a good credit rating and look good in front of the investors. If a parent company (in this case Enron) financed less than 97% of an initial investment in a SPE, it didn't have to consolidate in into its own accounts. If properly done, the legal isolation and the third party control over the SPE, reduce the risk of the credit. Therefore, off-balance sheet treatment of such a SPE involves enough third party equity. The third party's equity must be "at risk", otherwise the transferor would be required to consolidate the SPE into its own financial statements. Up to end of 2000, no one pointed fingers at Enron. For 2000, the corporation reported $101 billion revenue and the auditors gave a clean report. But, at this stage, Enron announced its intention that during the third quarter of 2001, it would book a loss of $1.01 billion and, at the same time, reducing shareholders' funds by $1.2 billion as a result of correcting accounting errors in the past. After a long trial, Andrew Fastow, the former Enron finance executive has been sentenced to six years in prison. Fastow pleaded guilty for fraud and money laundering in 2004 and also became the chief whiteness in the trial against Jeffrey Skilling and Ken Lay. His testimony helped convict Lay (who died in July 2006 after a heart-attack) and Skilling, who was sentenced to 24 years in jail. In May 2006, the latter was found guilty on 19 counts of conspiracy, fraud and inside trading over Enron scandal.
